Queensland State of Origin captain Johnathan Thurston has voiced his support for Aurukun during his post-game media comments after last night’s win.
He urged Aurukun’s children to believe in themselves and keep turning up to school.
Aurukun Mayor Dereck Walpo said Johnathon Thurston was a hero for the community’s children, especially after he had visited them last year.
“That was a really powerful message for our children after a really tough game of State of Origin,” he said.
“JT’s message was the talk of the town today and I hope it inspires Aurukun children to stick with their schooling.
“That statement shows he has not forgotten Aurukun and we really appreciate it as he is a great role model.
“Just a few months ago at the first birthday celebrations of his airline Skytrans he made a special mention of Aurukun and we can’t thank him enough for thinking of us.
“We have posted his video on Facebook and plenty of people are watching it again.
“We even noticed the Skytrans ads shown during the game featured some of our town’s kids and they were really excited about it.”
