The ANZAC Day Service commenced at 10 am in the Town Square.
This year we had a Defence Force representative who gave the address. Cpl Shaun Wilson of 51 FNQR, attended and really made Aurukun part of the rest of Australia for this special day of Remembrance.
One of the Aurukun community’s young women, Topsy Bowenda took part in the service and she did extremely well.
Jacob Yunkaporta, an Aurukun resident who has been in the Army Reserve over the years, carried the Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalion Flag. This was a first for the flag to be carried. The flag was presented to Aurukun Shire Council last year by Hon Warren Entsch MP.
A community BBQ was held at the completion of the Service and many volunteers assisted in the catering for the day.
For Linda Sivyer of Aurukun Shire Council, this was her fifth ANZAC Day that she has very capably organised until now. The Council expresses their heartfelt thanks to Linda for her efforts and hard work in ensuring ANZAC Day runs smoothly and is enjoyed by the Aurukun community.
