Aurukun tenants thrilled to receive keys to new homes

Aurukun Shire Council Mayor Dereck Walpo has handed over sets of keys to tenants of two new community houses in the Cape York Peninsula community.

The council engaged MiHaven Homes, based in Cairns, as contractor to build the houses, with three more due for completion by the end of the year.

Mayor Walpo said the difference with these houses is that the construction is being undertaken with the help of a number of local Aurukun trainees under the guidance of builders MiHaven.

“The trainees have completed a 12-week training program – a Certificate 2 in Construction – which involved ‘in-class’ work and ‘on site’ construction experience,” said Mayor Walpo.

“The team have formed a tight knit group, and now have the future prospects of commencing apprenticeships.

“Council has a number of new housing and refurbishment projects to support these apprenticeships, and look forward to their continued growth.”

The new tenants were excited to be presented with the keys to their new houses by the Mayor, and he thanked the team for their efforts.

“I now issue the trainees with a challenge to take up this potential life-changing opportunity.”
